Rarely is the ore, as mined, rich enough to be used directly by smelters; it needs to be concentrated. Zinc ores contain 5-15% zinc. To concentrate the ore it is first crushed and then ground to enable optimal separation from the other minerals. Typically, a zinc concentrate contains about 55% of zinc with some copper, lead and iron. Zinc concentration is usually done at the mine site to keep transport costs to smelters as low as possible.
Zinc metal is produced using extractive metallurgy. After grinding the ore, froth flotation, which selectively separates minerals from gangue by taking advantage of differences in their hydrophobicity, is used to get an ore concentrate. A final concentration of zinc of about 50% is reached by this process with the remainder of the concentrate being sulfur, iron, and SiO2.

Zinc Crushing Plant
The primary crusher, usually a jaw crusher, is used to reduce zinc ore into particles less than 150 millimeters in diameter. Generally, crushing continues by a impact crusher or cone crusher and an internal sizing screen until the ore is less than 19 mm. Crushing in jaw and cone crushers is a dry process, with water spray applied only to control dust.
